Malta National Aquarium

The Malta National Aquarium project encompasses an area of about 20,000 square meters and includes an aquarium, a public landscaped belvedere on the promenade, a multi-storey car park, facilities for local dive schools, catering facilities including a beach club, a merchandise outlet, and a tourist information kiosk.

In addition to replicas of historical artefacts that can be found in the waters around the Maltese islands, the Malta National Aquarium features Mediterranean fish, including fish that are commonly found in Maltese waters, as well as reptiles, insects, and amphibians, amongst other things. The aquarium has 41 tanks total.

The primary tank of the aquarium is home to a variety of exotic fish and marine life from the Indo-Pacific Ocean, such as black tip sharks, zebra sharks, leopard sharks, bamboo sharks, rays, and eels. The main tank has a diameter of around 12 meters and a walk-through tunnel that enables guests to encounter the fish at a much closer range than they would otherwise be able to.

Every tank has been painstakingly designed to seem like the ecosystem beneath the sea. The public aquarium includes other amenities such as a laboratory, a food production area, and quarantine facilities.

The characteristic shape of a curled shell in the shape of a starfish is the home of the complex that houses the Malta National Aquarium. The neighbouring promenade features a number of other recreation amenities, one of which is a play area designated specifically for children.

Education at Malta National Aquarium

Together with the iLearn Biology Team, the Malta National Aquarium has been working to develop high-quality educational programming that is in line with the requirements of the Maltese National curriculum. As a supplement to the students’ visit, we also provide activities that are connected to the curriculum that are led by the teaching staff at the Aquarium.

Every day, we host a variety of public presentations that aim to raise awareness about important topics such as the destruction of natural habitats, the extinction of species, and conservation. This innovative approach to education, known as interactive teaching, will one day contribute to the transformation of the conventional method of studying.

Environmental

Our mission is to become the preeminent organisation dedicated to protecting marine life and the environments in which it lives. In order to do this, we promote a feeling of environmental responsibility in both our guests and our staff members. We put what we teach into practice, and as a result, we treat the environment with complete and utter respect across all of our activities. In addition, we have improved the view from Qawra point while still preserving the gorgeous natural environment that surrounds it.

We have undertaken a number of projects in conjunction with a variety of local nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), with the goal of furthering our efforts to raise awareness and educate both school-aged children and adults.
