Gozo
The island of Gozo, or as it is known in Maltese, Għawdex, forms part of the Maltese archipelago. It is the second-largest island in the archipelago, after the island of Malta itself. Gozo is situated approximately 19 km (11.8 miles) to the North- West of Malta. It has a population of about 37,000 people and covers an area of 67 square kilometres (26 square miles). It is 14km (8.7 miles) long and 7,25km (4.505 miles) wide. Its inhabitants are known as Gozitans, or Għawdxin, in Maltese.
The island is rural in character and is less developed than the main island of Malta. It is known for its scenic hills, which are featured on its coat of arms. It is also very rich in cultural heritage and has several historic locations such as the Ġgantija Temples, which, together with the other Megalithic temples in Malta, are among the world’s oldest free-standing structures.
The island has several notable natural features such as the Inland Sea and Wied il-Mielaħ Window. This is a natural limestone arch. The Azure Window in Dwejra, was another remarkable geological feature which, however, collapsed due to rough seas in March 2017. In view of this, Gozo is the perfect location for lovely, quiet walks to explore the unspoilt natural beauty of the countryside.
There are many picturesque beaches on the island, most popular amongst which are Marsalforn, Xlendi and Ramla l-Ħamra. The latter is very well known for its reddish sand which is rather different from that found on other beaches. Gozo is also considered to be one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean.
Its capital city is Victoria. It is the only place on this tiny island where a concentration of shops may be found. Victoria is also home to the Citadel – a beautiful fortified city that has witnessed many historical moments when in its former glory. Visitors, here, can enjoy a wonderful view of the island and the clear, blue sea beyond, from its highest point.
Visitors can easily reach the island of Gozo by ferry in under 30 minutes. There are regular crossings between the port of Mgarr in Gozo and Cirkewwa , in Malta. Once in Gozo, the public bus transport system is very efficient. Otherwise, visitors can rent a car to easily explore all Gozo has to offer.
