Stone Age inhabitants from Scilly may have been responsible for building Hagar Qim, according to some evidence. The purpose of the building that is now known as Hagar Qim is worship, not human living. Statues were found at the site, and it is assumed that they had something to do with fertility. The National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta now has some of these figurines on exhibit in its collection.

The temple was found in the year 1839 AD, and more archaeological excavations were carried out in 1885, at which time a number of statuettes and an altar made of limestone were uncovered.

Mnajdra is a fascinating temple site that can be found about 500 meters away from Ħaġar Qim Temple, farther down the cliff face. It is located in a valley that is situated above the Southern cliffs. The surrounding landscape, which exemplifies the garigue that can be seen in the Mediterranean and is breathtaking in its bareness and seclusion, has been recognised as a Heritage Park.
