Anchor Bay Malta

Anchor Bay Malta is just one kilometre west from the village of Mellieħa and is one of the islands most popular beaches. It’s set within a picturesque cove with beautiful clear blue waters lapping up the beach and its surrounding rocky slopes. The area is popular for day trippers, fisherman, snorkelers and scuba divers.

The name of Anchor Bay Malta was given due to the countless ships anchors that have been found within the waters of the small inlet and the large anchor situated on the edge of the bay.

This small cove was one of the most charming and attractive bays in Malta until the area was completely taken over for the filming of ‘Popeye the Movie’ in 1980 starring Robin Williams. The whole village set still stands in place thirty years later and has become a mini theme park and tourist attraction.

Popeye Village Malta has grown from its days as a film set into one of the islands major tourist attractions. It’s filled with a number of fun activities for all the family, young or old. It’s open all year round and guarantees an enjoyable day out.

Anchor Bay Malta is surrounded by rocky slopes on either side and even though the sea is generally calm here, the exposed nature of the cove make it suitable for good swimmers and snorkelers. The waters here are great for snorkelling with lots of marine life to see but even better for scuba diving.

It’s a very popular dive site due to the extensive marine life and a large cave systems. Surfacing can be done within several chambers but keep your regulator in as the air is often not very good. Marine life here includes;  moray, grouper, wrasse, scorpion fish, parrot fish and octopus.

At Anchor Bay during the summer months you will find food stands, restrooms, umbrella rentals and watersports rentals.
