Monumental Church Mosta
Mosta is a significant town in Malta’s central region known for the Monumental Church. The edifice was built by a French architect living in Malta, George Grognet de Vasse, to imitate the Pantheon in Rome and was constructed between 1833 and 1860 over another church dating from the 17th century.
The dome is said to be one of Europe’s largest, though whether it is the third or fourth largest is still up for question. It’s so large that it can be seen from almost anywhere on the island.
Monumental Church Mosta is also known for an incident that occurred there in 1942, when a German bomb was dropped over it, piercing the dome and falling into the church during mass.
