St Peters Pool
St Peters Pool is a small natural pool cut from the stratified limestone rock that makes up the entire island. It is officially located within Marsaxlokk but is only a short drive away from the major harbour. It’s best avoided on stormy days because it’s open to the Mediterranean, although it’s open almost the entire summer season, from June to September.
Because of its distant position, St Peter’s Pool is rarely overcrowded, despite its tiny size. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, it’s best to visit this part of the Maltese coastline early because parking is restricted and the roads are narrow.
The turquoise and aqua coloured waters of St Peters Pool are often clear enough to see the bottom, with access into the water either by leaping in or via the metal ladders affixed to the rock. Once in the water, there are no meaningful handholds other than the sharp rock itself. At all times, children will need to be watched.
Visitors can lounge on the flat rocks that surround the pool in between swims and enjoy the sun, but you’ll need to pack everything you’ll need for your stay because there are no amenities. A few hundred meters away, paid parking is available at the top of a series of rail-free concrete steps that go across a natural amphitheatre of steep-sided trees.
